PASADO SIMPLE.  “To be

 

To Be Verb (Ser o Estar) El verbo 'To be' tiene una importancia especial en inglés. Corresponde a los verbos en español "ser" o "estar".

Dependiendo del sentido de la frase deduciremos de cuál de los dos se trata.

I am a computer science student    

Yo soy un estudiante de informática

 

Juan is in Cuautitlán studying computer science.

Juan está en Cuautitlán estudiando informática.

 

Tiene algunos usos especiales distintos a sus equivalentes en español.

 Sirve para expresar la edad, en cuyo caso se traduce por 'tener.'

Mary is 20 years old                         Maria tiene 20 años

You are 21 years old                        Tú tienes 21 años

 

 

Para expresar las sensaciones también se emplea el verbo 'to be' y equivale al 'tener' en español.

Lucia is thirsty          Lucia tiene sed

They are hungry       Ellos tienen hambre

 

También para hablar sobre el clima. En este caso se traduce por 'hacer.'

It's windy                   Hace viento  

It's very cold               Hace mucho frío

Describing HEIGHT

Affirmative form: I was 1.60 meters when I was 20 years old.
Negative form: I was not 1.60 meters when I was 20 years old.
Negative form using contraction: I wasn’t 1.60 meters when I was 20 years old.
Interrogative form: Was I 1.60 meters when I was 20 years old?
Affirmative answer: Yes, I was.
Negative answer: No, I was not.
Negative answer with contraction: No, I wasn’t.


DESCRIBING WEIGHT

Affirmative form: I was 50 kilos when I was 20 years old.
Negative form: I was not 50 kilos when I was 20 years old.
Negative form using contraction: I wasn’t 50 kilos when I was 20 years old.
Interrogative form: Was I 50 kilos when I was 20 years old?
Affirmative answer: Yes, I was.
Negative answer: No, I was not.
Negative answer with contraction: No, I wasn’t.
